A small radio needs a small battery. The TalentCell 12-volt battery pack may be a good match for portable QRP operation.

It is light, rechargeable and less costly than many ham-radio batteries. TalentCell now offers three useful sizes on Amazon.

The quick answer: Choose the small pack for short trips. Pick a larger one when you want more operating time.

Three Battery Sizes

VersionBest useMaximum 12V output
3,000 mAhLight packs and short outings3 amps
6,000 mAhLonger POTA and field use3 amps
8,300 mAhMore operating time and radios needing more current6 amps

The 3,000 mAh pack weighs about 6.7 ounces. The 6,000 mAh pack holds twice as much power but weighs about twice as much. The 8,300 mAh model stores 99.9 watt-hours and weighs about 1.1 pounds.

All three are small enough for portable use. The right one depends on how far you must carry it and how long you plan to operate.

Why It Appeals to QRP Operators

These packs have several useful features:

  • Small and easy to carry
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion cells
  • Battery-level lights
  • Charger included
  • Built-in battery protection
  • 5-volt USB output on the USB models
  • No large battery box needed

The USB port can charge a phone or power a small accessory. However, using the USB port will shorten the battery’s radio operating time.

One KE2YK reader, Jim WJ1MK, reported using a TalentCell pack with his Elecraft KX2. He described it as small, light and well suited to portable outings.

Check Your Radio First

These batteries are sold as 12-volt packs, but the output is not fixed at 12 volts. It starts near 12.6 volts and can fall as low as 9 volts while the battery runs down.

Some QRP radios work within that range. Others may shut down, lower their power or act poorly when the voltage gets low.

Before buying, check three things in your radio manual:

  1. The radio’s allowed voltage range
  2. The amount of current it needs while transmitting
  3. The plug size and polarity

The TalentCell DC port uses a 5.5 × 2.1 mm center-positive plug. Your radio may need a different plug or cable.

Never guess about polarity. A reversed connection can damage a radio.

Which Size Should You Buy?

Choose the 3,000 mAh Pack If:

  • Low weight is most important
  • You take short trips
  • You operate mostly CW or digital modes at low power
  • Your radio needs no more than 3 amps

Choose the 6,000 mAh Pack If:

  • You want more operating time
  • You do regular POTA activations
  • A little extra weight is not a problem
  • Your radio needs no more than 3 amps

Choose the 8,300 mAh Pack If:

  • You expect a longer day in the field
  • You want the 6-amp output limit
  • You plan to power small accessories
  • You do not mind carrying about 1.1 pounds

A larger number does not always mean a better choice. For backpack operation, the smallest pack that meets your needs is often best.

Compatibility note: Check your radio’s voltage, current, plug and polarity before ordering. These batteries are not suitable for every radio.

Battery Safety

Use only the charger made for your battery. Do not use a regular power supply or a charger meant for another type of battery.

Also follow these basic rules:

  • Keep the battery dry
  • Do not open or change the battery
  • Do not charge it on a bed or carpet
  • Stop using it if it becomes hot, swollen or damaged
  • Turn it off before connecting or removing cables
  • Use a fused radio power cable when possible
  • Recharge it every few months while it is stored

The KE2YK Takeaway

The TalentCell is not a high-power station battery. It is a small and affordable power source for compatible QRP radios.

The 3,000 mAh model is the best choice when pack weight matters most. The 6,000 mAh version offers a better balance for longer field sessions. The 8,300 mAh model gives you the most power and the highest current limit.

Check your radio first, use the correct cable and test the setup at home before taking it into the field.

For the right QRP radio, this little battery may be all you need.
