POTA Activation February 19th, 2023. It’s always a blast to find time to do a fast POTA activation. This time, Rocky Point Pine Barrens State Forest was in my sights. For this event, I used a 20 meter Hamstick mag mounted on my SUV, the Kenwood TS-50/AT-50, the AEA Morse Machine and a CW Morse single lever paddle.
This combo has been good for cold winter in the SUV ops. Of course the downside is that the combo has no portability. I’d say the radio weighs around 10lbs and needs a substantial battery to run it. For portability, the KX3 is my rig of choice for summer ops. As an optimist, I’m preparing early for spring and have the Elecraft AX1 on order. I just want to find out for myself how this compromise antenna performs from a park bench.
Bob AB2WW sold me the TS-50 over 10 years ago. It’s been a real good performer for mobile HF ops. However, these 90’s vintage Kenwoods are known for popping caps. Since I have shown the TS-50 no mercy, I have been very fortunate so far. This compact rig keeps on chugging and is just too sweet to leave home in a box!
Band conditions were very good and there was no noticeable QSB on 20 meters. The band was heavily loaded with QRM from stations calling CW TEST, and the usual idiots tuning up and other run of the mill nonsense! Undeterred, I always stick to my guns and stay on one frequency (14.038 today) and bang away! No matter what, I always have a good time and enjoy finding out just how far I can stretch the RF from a cheap Hamstick. Today my best contact from Long Island was Idaho!
